Hiking with your four-legged friend

Hund am Achensee

There are more than 500 km of marked hiking trails around Lake Achen and in the Rofan and Karwendel Mountains – plenty of adventure tours for two- and four-legged friends.

And the best part:
Your dog is allowed to swim in the nearby Achen Lake! The cool water is a great treat for water-loving dogs, especially in the warm summer months.

Where dog owners can go everywhere with their dogs:

  • Dogs are allowed to swim in Lake Achen
  • Karwendel lift: Take it together up to the Zwölferkopf – and then take the Tunnel trail down to an altitude of 650 meters via the Rodel cabin to Pertisau.
  • Dogs are allowed in the Rofan gondola – hike in the rocky landscape and take a break at the Maritzalm.
  • Your dog is also allowed on the Lake Achen boats – muzzles are compulsory here.
  • You don't have to do without your faithful companion on the steam train either.

Tips for your arrival:

Flying with your dog

… is not as difficult as you might think. Especially small dogs (up to 5 kg) are allowed to travel as a carry on with most airlines in a transport box or bag.

Large dogs, on the other hand, can travel in the cargo compartment in a stable transport box. The owner should be aware that the dog also needs a ticket and is x-rayed at the checkpoint in the same way as two-legged passengers.

Arrival by train:

Small dogs (not bigger than a standard house cat) often can travel free of charge on the train as long as they are in a transport box.

It can get expensive with a night train (in sleep and couchettes) because you have to book the whole compartment --> https://www.oebb.at/en/reiseplanung-services/vor-ihrer-reise/mit-haustieren-verreisen.html

Arriving by car with your dog

If you are travelling with your dog by car, a transport box in the trunk is the safest option.

According to the law, your dog is not allowed to ride "free" in the car and must be secured like luggage – to protect you and you four-legged friend.

Guidelines for a holiday with your dog in Austria

Dogs must wear a muzzle when riding on public transportation such as Bus and train.
